🌱Week 4: Rooted in Community🌱
Last week, we reflected on being rooted in God's presence. To remain close to Jesus, our source of peace, strength, and above all else life. This week, we are going to shift our focus to something God designed us for from the very beginning: that is community.
Our whole theme has been all about being Rooted. It has brought up a lot of tree imagery, but this week might be my favorite one yet. It paints the perfect picture of what it means to be rooted in community.
A tree with deep roots doesn’t stand alone. Not normally anyways. No, trees are usually part of a forest or group. Guess what, beneath the surface, trees share nutrients through hidden root networks. If you want the fancy word it is through a network, they call the mycorrhizal network. When one is weak, the others support it. They send water or nutrients when one is weak. They send distress and warning signals. I think that is so cool. And guess what.
God designed His people the same way. We weren’t created to grow in isolation, but in connection. To share in our struggles and burdens. The victories as well. To lift the other up when they feel weak. To walk alongside one another in this life.
In Proverbs 27:17 we read,
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
Community isn’t just a nice concept or something that is nice to have. No, community is absolutely necessary for us in order to stay rooted in faith. It is a crucial part to our walk with Christ. We were never meant to do it alone, in isolation. When we isolate ourselves, we miss out on the sharpening, the accountability, and the encouragement that only a good community can bring.
Just like iron shapes iron, people in your life can help refine your faith even when it’s uncomfortable. Finding a good community who is rooted in Christ leads to a community that sharpens one another in the walk with Christ as we do the work of the Lord.
In Galatians 6:2 we find another point on why community is so important,
“Carry each other's burdens, and this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." -Galatians 6:2
True community carries the weight of one another’s struggles. You don't have to face the trials of this world alone and in isolation. When life feels heavy and you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, a rooted community holds you up. And when someone else is burdened, your strength becomes their support.
What an absolute honor it is that we are called into community that models the way Christ loves us and shows up for us. Obviously, it is not perfect, nothing but God is, but it is a beautiful exchange that fulfills the law of Christ: love in action.
But there’s a reason community can feel so hard to find. Because we have a real enemy, one who wants you to feel isolated and unseen. He whispers lies like “No one understands,” or “You’re better off on your own.” He knows it’s easier to attack when you’re alone, disconnected, and weary.
But when you are surrounded by a community rooted in Christ, those lies lose their power. You have people who will remind you of truth, who will lift your eyes back to Jesus, who will pray with you and fight for you when you can’t fight for yourself.
Maybe for you, community has felt hard to find. Maybe you’ve been hurt by people in the past, or you’ve pulled back because showing up feels exhausting. Maybe life feels too busy. Or you feel like nobody wants to connect with you. I get that.
But can I remind you of something? Community is still worth pursuing. It’s still part of God’s design for your growth and healing. Healing begins when you open up again. Strength returns when you let others in.
This week, I encourage you to take one simple step toward being more rooted in community. Send that text. Join that Bible study. Stay a little longer after church. Let yourself be seen.
Because God often uses people to reveal His love, His presence, and His faithfulness.
You don’t have to carry it all alone anymore. Let your roots grow deep—not just in His love, His Word and His presence, but in the people, He’s placed around you.
🌱Reflection Question:
Where in your life have you been tempted to isolate, and what is one step you can take this week to stay rooted in godly community?
🌱Prayer:
Lord, thank You for creating me for community. Help me to lean into the people You’ve placed in my life and to love them the way You’ve called me to. When I feel alone or hesitant, remind me that strength is found in unity. Root me in relationships that reflect Your heart—where truth, grace, and encouragement grow deep. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
