🌱Week 3: Rooted in His Presence🌱
Last week, we talked about being rooted in God’s Word—how His truth keeps us grounded and strengthens us. But knowing the Word is only part of the relationship. This week, we’re going even deeper. We’re talking about what it means to be rooted in His presence—to not just know about God, but to actually walk with Him, abide in Him, and live aware of Him every day.
In John 15:4-5 Jesus tells us to,
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:4–5
What happens to a branch that’s been broken off a tree? Well, it dries up quickly, doesn’t it? The leaves begin to wither, the bark becomes all brittle, and soon it is lifeless. No matter how strong or healthy that branch once looked when attached to the tree, the moment it’s cut off from the tree—it begins to die.
This is pretty much the same image that Jesus gives us in John 15. He is reminding us that He is the vine, and we are the branches. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. The life, strength, peace, and fruit we long for all flow from staying connected to His presence.
When you think about it, it becomes way too easy to get caught up trying to “do” all the right things for God. Things like to serve, lead, grow, and achieve. But what ends up happening while we chase those things is we quietly drift from intimacy with Him. Jesus didn’t call us to perform for Him; He called us to abide in Him. Abiding isn’t about striving, it’s about staying. It’s about remaining near, keeping our hearts close, and drawing our daily strength from His presence. We can't expect to remain close in His presence when we chase after everything else.
But, when we are rooted in His presence, we begin to live differently. Our reactions soften. Our peace deepens. Our purpose becomes clearer. Fruit begins to naturally grow—not because we forced it by our own will or strength, but because we’re connected to the Source of life who grows the fruit we long for.
Reading and knowing God's Word is our foundation to a rooted faith that stands on truth. Praying and remaining in His presence is our lifeline. Many of us neglects prayer when in reality when we stop talking to God—we stop being able to hear His voice clearly. When we stop praying, we stop remaining in His presence and begin remaining in the noise of the world. We then begin to drift.
When we do drift—when prayer becomes an afterthought, when worship feels distant, when we rely more on our own strength than His—we start to feel dry and disconnected from Him. The good news? He’s never far away. The secret? Jesus invites us again and again: “Abide in Me.” It’s an open invitation to rest, to breathe, and to simply be with Him.
I don't know about you but to me that sounds pretty refreshing in a world that is in a constant state of chaos, deceit, where the culture and society are always shifting and changing, and hard to keep up with.
Maybe today you feel worn out. Maybe you have been relying on your own strength and wisdom. Maybe you’ve been pouring into everyone else and realize you haven’t stopped to sit with the One who fills you. Listen, He’s not asking you to give more—He’s asking you to come close. To slow down. To be still in His presence. To give it all to Him. The One who carries it all, who only asks for you to dwell in His presence and let the Spirit do the rest.
The true fruit doesn’t come from your effort—it comes from your connection. Stay close to the Vine, and everything else will flow from there. He never asked you to come by your own power and strength. He asked you to come find rest, to remain in Him to find the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7) and to let the Spirit flow through you from there.
Find rest in His presence today. Lay it all down at His feet. Humble yourself before Him and know it is when we remain rooted in His presence that we find the breeze of peace and steadiness in the chaos of the storms around us. Know when we are rooted in His presence the fruit begins to grow in ways we never expected or could do on our own.
🌱Reflection Question:
Where in your life have you been trying to “produce fruit” on your own strength instead of simply abiding in Jesus?
🌱Prayer:
Lord, thank You for inviting me to abide in You. Help me to stop striving by my own power and strength and start resting in Your presence. Teach me to draw my strength, peace, and joy from You each day. Keep me connected to You, the true Vine, so that my life bears lasting fruit for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
